Three things this valley keeps to itself.

Balloon flights happen elsewhere. Underground cities exist elsewhere. Cave hotels exist elsewhere. Never at this scale, this age, or against a landscape this strange. Plan the rest of the trip around these three.

Before sunrise

A hundred balloons at first light

Around 150 balloons launch above Göreme on a clear morning — more than anywhere on earth. Pickup is in the dark; the burner thumps on; the valley fills with colour as the sun comes up over the rim. The chimneys, the cones, the pigeon caves — all of it reads different from a thousand feet up.

Eighty metres down

Derinkuyu and Kaymakli

Byzantine Christians hid from invading armies by cutting cities into the volcanic rock. Eight levels deep. Ventilation shafts. Churches, kitchens, stables, wineries, schools. Up to twenty thousand people lived underground for months at a time. Two of the cities are still walkable today.

In the rock

Carved rooms, painted ceilings

The tuff is soft when fresh, then sets harder than concrete. Early Christians used it to carve hundreds of churches — frescoes still on the ceilings a thousand years later. Modern owners use it to carve hotels. You sleep in the same rock the monks prayed in.

After the balloons

Once you’ve seen the sky, see the ground.

Most travellers come for the dawn flight, then spend the next days in the valleys — on quads, on horseback, in the underground. The Cappadocia trip extends from there. Start with whatever gets booked most.

By tour type

Or pick how you want to spend the day.

Balloons for the iconic dawn. ATVs for speed through the valleys. Horseback for the slow version. Red Tour for the north, Green Tour for the south, Combined for both. The underground for what's eighty metres below.

The classic two days

Red north, Green south.

Cappadocia organises itself into two day-tour loops. Red handles the northern viewpoints, the chimneys and the Open Air Museum. Green handles Derinkuyu, Ihlara and the Selime monastery in the south. Three operator picks across both.

Through the chimneys

Sunset in the saddle.

The valleys read different from a quad bike or a horse than they do from above. Most operators run these at sunset — the rock catches the light. Three of the strongest picks across ATV, quad and horseback.

If you’re coming from somewhere else

The long-haul Cappadocia day.

Most travellers reach Cappadocia from Istanbul or Antalya. The packages handle the flight, the transfers, the hotel and the day-tour rhythm in one booking. Three operators worth the early-morning departure.
